Fiat Chrysler Automobiles new self-driving partner Aurora now backed by Amazon

Aurora Innovations, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) new partner for developing self-driving vehicles is now backed by Amazon. FCA will work with Aurora so that the Aurora Driver self-driving platform can be integrated into commercial vehicles. Although Financial terms haven’t been made public yet, the companies did sign a memorandum. In a news release the FCA CEO stated: “As a part of FCA’s autonomous vehicle strategy, we will continue to work with strategic partners to address the needs of the customers in a rapidly changing industry.”

Aurora, headquartered in Palo Alto, California, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, has its own partnerships with leading automobile companies such as Volkswagen, Hyundai and the Chinese electric car company named Byton. “The Aurora Driver has been integrated into six vehicle platforms ranging from Sedans to SUV’s and minivans, to Class 8 trucks and commercial vehicles,” Aurora said in a news release. Aurora’s co-founders, Sterling Anderson had led the design, development of Tesla Model X and led the team that delivered the Tesla Autopilot and Chris Urmson helped found, lead and the served as chief officer for self-driving cars at Alphabet, now the parent company of Google. The third co-founder of Aurora, Drew Bagnell was a founding member of Uber’s Advanced Technology Centre.

FCA signed on to partnerships with BMW, Intel, and Mobileye on self-driving technology development. FCA also signed a partnership with Waymo to supply the company with Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans. FCA’s self-driving vehicles approach is different than Ford which heavily invested in Agro AI and General Motors that had purchased cruise automation.
