Through its latest Patent filing, Apple aims for improved user interactions

In the latest news coming from Apple Inc., it has been announced that the smartphone giant has patented a new technology known as ‘Mobile Electronic Device with Squeeze Detection’.

And the company has big hopes from this patent as it claims that user interaction with their devices will go through a complete makeover with this new technology.

As per published in the patent, it states that the company is developing a technology for squeezable sensors. And apparently, by implementing these sensors it would allow users to squeeze the sides of their iPhones for various functions like activating the voice assistance Siri, opening menu to name a few.

A summary of the patent application filed by the US Patent and Trademark Office reads as follows, “At least one deformable housing wall shall be included in a force sensing compliant enclosure for a particular electronic device. Along with that also a minimum of one strain concentration portion should be located on the deformable housing wall where strain incurred by application of a force that deforms the deformable housing wall is higher than any other portions of the deformable housing wall. The strain concentrating portion should consist of a second thickness that is way more thinner than any other portion of the deformable housing wall. The strain concentration portion should be positioned with a minimum of one sensor and should be able to detect strain that incurs by the application of the force that deforms the deformable housing wall.”

This squeezable sides technology bears a lot of resemblance with Apple’s  3D Touch Technology. The 3D Touch Technology was initially launched in the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus smartphones, it is basically a technology that presents users with different options depending upon the pressure exerted on the screen.

The 3D Touch Technology detect the pressure applied by a user on the screen, and in turn, allows him/her to interact smoothly with iPhone’s apps and games. The main feature that the 3D Touch enabled actions offers is that it allows users to complete essential tasks in a quick and simple manner while also allowing a user to engage more in enhanced gameplay.

However, Squeezable sides technology is not by any means a new technology for smartphones as several smartphones like the HTC U11 smartphone, launched in 2017, flaunts the feature of squeezable sides. Also, Google’s flagship smartphone the Google’s Pixel 2 and the Pixel XL 2 come with ‘squeezable sides’.
