With the incredible wealth of content to choose from on Netflix, it is surprising that there are no series about poker. There are a few films on the platform such as Molly’s Game and Cold Deck, but it seems that the streaming service is missing a trick by not offering a series. Amazon Prime viewers can watch World Series of Poker footage on the Netflix rival’s platform, giving it the edge when it comes to Texas Hold’em-based content.

Why is Now the Right Time for a Series?

During the poker boom of the 2000s, there were various televised series that helped spread the word about the game. Late Night Poker, Poker After Dark, and High Stakes Poker all helped Texas Hold’em gain traction, and put professional players in the spotlight. These all fizzled out, though, and now there isn’t much poker action happening on the small screen.

This is surprising, as poker is more popular than it has ever been. Millions of players all over the world play online poker games for real money, and have access to a wealth of options of varying stakes. They can play tournaments or cash games, and there is something to suit everyone’s tastes. Judging by the number of people who play, the market is certainly there for a poker television series.

At the moment, up-and-coming players tend to turn to YouTube for tips on how to improve at the game. There are plenty of streamers out there giving excellent advice. But an engaging and interesting television series would arguably trump the short clips found on the streaming channel. Not only would a poker series be a form of escapism, but it would also be educational.

It Could Replicate Successful Sporting Documentaries

Netflix does have a pre-existing model that it could follow if it decided to produce a series based on Texas Hold’em and compete with Amazon Prime for the best poker content. The platform has enjoyed great success in recent years with many sports documentaries, and it could opt to create something similar for poker.

The most popular sports documentaries on Netflix to date are Sunderland Til I Die and The Last Dance, both of which received a multitude of plaudits from critics. The former follows the supporters of one of the most famous English soccer clubs of all time, who recently fell from grace and dropped down from the top flight into the third tier. The latter tells the story of Michael Jordan’s final season with the Chicago Bulls, along with details about the player’s glittering career.

If a poker series was to follow a similar format to these incredible documentaries it could focus on one or more of the best poker players in the world. One great option would be to detail the career of Phil Ivey, who is regarded as one of the greatest all-round poker experts on the planet. Another idea could be to focus on the new wave of players who rose through the ranks after the poker boom. This would include players like Bryn Kenney and Justin Bonomo, both of whom started as Magic: The Gathering players.

Netflix offers a lot of different genres with its content, but poker is not represented as much as it could be. By releasing some Texas Hold’em content, the streaming service could enjoy great success.
