How to use AI for video editing (5 simple steps)

robot AI

A lot of people assume that AI is something that is relatively new, and it is only now that it has become popular, and while the latter half of the sentence is relatively true, but in fact AI has been around for decades now.

It is only now that the regular everyday people are able to use AI tools that can help them with some of their tasks.

So it is obvious that people might assume that the different AI tools that are available can easily help them in everything because people are making it seem like that.

Well, that is far from true. Yes, great AI tools like ChatGPT and Holara and others are able to produce texts, images, etc., on the user’s prompt, but there is still a human hand required to make everything work.

The same is the case with AI being used for video editing. If you are thinking that an AI would simply edit all your videos with different effects and you just have to import and export the file, then you are wrong.

Currently, there are no AI tools available that will edit a video from scratch and give you a final product.

However, there are some AI tools available that can help editors in editing video clips and make a rough cut of the entire video.

The user still has to go through all the clips and edit the rough cut to make it seem like a professionally edited video, but the user can get some assistance from AI in making the video.

So, with that noted down, let’s discuss the ways in which you can use AI for editing your video.

AI platform required for editing videos

So, the AI platform that I will be using for this article is called ‘Gling’. Gling is an AI-powered tool that helps video editors cut away all the unnecessary cuts and silences in between your videos.

This platform is specifically designed for content creators on YouTube who regularly upload videos on their channels.

I would not recommend using this AI tool if you are trying to edit something like a short film, music video, or anything that requires pauses in your video and isn’t something where a user speaks the entire time.

You can try to use it for editing those videos, as well, but that is not the main purpose for which this AI platform was designed.

I say this because the whole process of Gling is to simply ease out the process for editors, where they have to cut down the parts of the videos that are usually taken before and after the footage is shot.

Cost and Availability of the AI Platform

Gling is available to use for free for the first video that you edit using this platform; after that each video you edit via this tool, you will be charged $5/video.

Gling is currently available for macOS and Windows devices.

It should be noted that this program currently works only with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, so you have to be using those software for editing your video.

There is apparently an update coming along later this year where you can use this program for DaVinci Resolve for multi cam-setup, as well.

So, with all that out of the way, let’s discuss the steps you would have to follow o use this platform.

Steps for editing your video using AI

1. Download the application and set up your account

The first thing that you need to follow is to download the program on your computing device.

You can easily download the application by going to its website, and it will automatically recommend you its software based on the computing device that you are using.

Once you have downloaded the application, you will be required to make an account on the platform. The process of making an account is quite similar to other applications asking for the same request.

2. Import your files

After making your account, you will see the option of simply dragging and dropping your footage on the program. Simply choose the video files that you want to edit and drop them on the platform.

When you have successfully imported your files, you will see an option of languages on the top-right section of the screen; choose the preferred language in which you make your videos.

The most effective language will be ‘English’ for this program, but you can try out other languages also.

Once you have selected the language, you will also see the option of ‘Cut’, select the option of ‘Silences’ and ‘Bad Takes’ or choose the option that best suits you.

Click on Continue.

Once you have done that, the program will then process the entire video and actually listen to each sentence that you have said in the video and make a transcribe of your video and try to choose all the best takes.

There might still be places where the program would leave some bad takes that you can edit later.

This process will take some time, based on the overall length of the video you have imported.

3. Preview the material

Once the program has finished transcribing your video, it will open a new page where it will show each and every sentence that you have said in the video.

And the sentences that it considers as ‘bad takes’ will be highlighted in grey colour with an emoji of a scissor next to the sentences.

So, you can easily go through the entire transcription and see whether it has worked properly or not.

If you think that it cut the wrong dialogue or take, then you can easily just click on the scissor emoji, and it will bring back the take.

You can also choose a specific dialogue that you think that it missed and simply select them and cut them out of the video, as well.

At the bottom of the screen, you will see an option of a ‘Play’ button, so you can easily hit on that, and you will be able to preview the entire video and see if it works or not.

You can also add new files by going to the ‘file’ option, and it will only process the new files and attach them after the old processed file

4. Export the files

Once you are satisfied with the overall output produced by the program, you can go to the ‘Export’ option that is available in the top-right corner of the screen.

Once you hit the export button, you will see that it is able to export in the ‘.xml’ file for Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro and Resolve, so it is not losing any data and provides original data just with these rough cuts.

You can also export the subtitles and even an mp4 and mp3 file out of this rough-cut video.

5. Open your video editing program

Once you have exported the video file from the program and saved it on your computing device, you have to open your video editing program and import the .xml file on your video editing program.

After importing the video file, you will see that the video is still in its original format and the program did not change anything about it, except cut out the silence and the bad takes that you selected.

After this, you are on your own. You have your rough cut ready and now you can edit the video, as per your liking and make it look like the video that you wanted to make at the first place.

After you are satisfied with editing your video, you can simply import the subtitle file from Gling program AI and apply it to your video.

And you are done, you have successfully used an AI tool to speed up your video editing time, and save yourself the hassle of cutting down unnecessary takes and silence spots in your video!

FAQ

Let’s discuss some of the frequently asked questions regarding this topic

Is there any AI for video editing?

As I mentioned above, there are no AI platforms present right now that will edit your video fully, but there are definitely AI tools that will help you ease your editing process, and the above-mentioned Gling AI is one of those platforms.

Is there a free AI video editor?

AI tools, in general, run mostly on providing users a free trial and then charge them per task that they ask the AI tool to complete. The same is the case with Gling.

The first video that you edit on Gling is one hundred percent free of cost, and after that it will charge you $5/video you edit on the platform.

Can AI edit your YouTube videos?

The plain and simple answer is: No, it cannot edit your videos fully. At the end of the day, video editing requires a human touch to make it feel organic and not mechanic, and you have to do the hardwork if you want your videos to be good.

There’s a reason why all the popular YouTubers still edit their videos. Mr. Beast’s new video had nearly 4,000hrs of video editing went into it.

So, no, AI cannot edit your YouTube videos, and you have to do it on your own.

Conclusion

Well, there you have it. An article discussing how you can use AI tools to help you in video editing, rather than AI tools that will straight up edit your videos.

Gling is a fairly powerful AI tools available right now in the market, and not a lot of people are aware about it.

It is essentially helpful for video editors who edit YouTube videos, because majority of the YouTube videos you see has one person talking to the camera for the whole video.

That’s not to say that there aren’t videos that have some form of action happening on them, but when it comes to recording these videos all the recording will have some blank moments.

And YouTube is all about retaining the viewer’s attention, and blank moments don’t tend to retain the attention. So, tools like Gling can be really helpful in editing all the blank and silent moments and deliver the main content.

Still, at the end of the day, you have to edit the video and, so far, AI can only help you so much in helping you edit it. Maybe in the future it will be able to fully edit it out and you just have to simply import and export the files.

But, what’s the fun in that?

As always, these have been my thoughts on this topic. What about you? Do share your thoughts in the comments down below!
