Streaming service Hulu was launched as a direct competitor to the streaming giant, Netflix. Hulu is basically owned by Comcast (NBC), Disney (ABC) and Fox. Hulu aces at the art of original content and was touted as the pitstop to binge network TV shows.
A TechCrunch report states that Disney has reported losses of at least $580 million for the last fiscal year. No prizes in guessing it’s for their investment in Hulu. Disney’s statement at the SEC filing was that, “A higher loss from our investment in Hulu, partially offset by a favorable comparison to a loss from BAMTech in the prior year.”

Wonder what are the figures for NBC and Fox? It hasn’t been released yet but, we do know that their losses could be lesser than that of Disney. TechCrunch further states that all the streaming services by Disney have resulted in billions of dollars of loss. Also, WWE has notified that they will leave the association with BAMTech and join hands with Endeavor Streaming.
All this could paint a picture of Hulu’s uncertain future. All the three networks own 30 percent of it and the remaining 10 percent is with AT&T. Not to forget that Disney will be taking over Fox’s share in Hulu once their takeover is complete. This proves their majority share when it comes to losses.
Comcast and Disney are all set to go ahead with their own streaming services. What will happen to Hulu once separate streaming services are out? We are not sure if their content will still air in Hulu or everything will be moved to the new network. TechCrunch also has inputs on Disney wanting to invest more in Hulu and to focus on international expansion. This will be topped with more original content. It will take a while for Hulu to try and beat Netflix and Amazon at the streaming game. Until then, watch out this space for more on Hulu.
