Different types of video editing
Let’s talk about the different types of video editing. Not video editing software, but the different types of video editing.
There are only two types of video editing one is Linear Editing and the other is Non-Linear editing.
Let’s talk about them in-depth.
Linear Editing
Linear Editing was the technique that was used in older times when they used to capture everything on film. The artists at that time used to actually cut each film and splice the films together to make it look like one continuous shot.
This method is not used today because of how painstaking it was and how much time it usually takes to edit one particular shot, but it is still the original way of how video editing was born.
And a fun fact, a lot of the directors, such as Christopher Nolan, Quinten Tarantino, John Krasenkey, etc., still shoot on Film for their movies. This gives them a really great image quality and aesthetic look.
Non-Linear Editing
Non-linear editing is the editing that all of us are able to perform on using various different softwares and apps. It was first developed by AVID in the late 1980s, where they were able to digitally edit the entire video.
This meant that artists had the ability to dump all their video files on a computing device and edit the film on a software that was able to replicate all the movements and tools which were achieved in Linear Editing.
The great thing about non-linear editing is the fact that you are able to make the video entirely on your computer, and this process has been continuously worked upon for us, users, to edit our videos easier than ever before.
How many types of video editing software are there?
So, all this leads to the final question. How many different types of video editing software are available now? Well, you have three different types of video editing softwares or apps that you can choose from.

And lastly, you have mobile editing apps that allow you to edit videos from your smartphone.
They have come up recently only, and thanks to the powerful chips that are available on our phones, these editing apps are capable of quickly editing any type of video that you like, with zero lag.

FAQs
Let’s discuss some of the questions that people frequently ask about this topic.
What is basic video editing?
First of all, let’s just discuss what actually is basic video editing. This seems very much like a question that you would get asked in a film school of some kind, but it is a fair question to be asked nonetheless.
Video editing, at its core, is simply about manipulating and grouping certain different videos into one collective video that has all your desired effects, transitions, etc.
That is what’s been happening since the time filmmaking was discovered, and people understood how they could create a certain amount of still photos to look like a moving image.
And the techniques have remained the same ever since. It’s just that today’s tools are much more expensive and refined than they used to be before.
Which type of video editing is best?
As mentioned above, there are two types of video editing. Linear and Non-Linear video editing. Linear editing really paved the way for what Non-linear editing could possibly do.
If there was no Linear editing, then chances are that you wouldn’t even be able to edit anything today. But, that being said, it is obvious that Non-Linear video editing is the better option of the two.
It is much faster, and you are much more in control of what you can put up on the screen compared to Linear editing.
Which software is most used for video editing?
As I mentioned above, there are now three different types of video editing softwares/apps that people use these days for editing their videos.
These three types are targeted at different groups of people and markets. If you want to edit on your computing device but don’t want to download the software, go for online video editing software.
The same is the case with mobile video editing apps as well. They are faster and perform most of the tasks.
That being said, it is actually the computing device softwares that are most used for video editing simply because they are the most powerful of the entire bunch and they are able to perform a lot more tasks than the others.
Best video editing software for beginners
There are lots of different options to choose from for beginners because there are plenty of video editing softwares present right now in the market.
A lot of beginners make the mistake of choosing the most advanced video editing software cause it is rated high and is the industry standard.
Nine out of ten times, you don’t even require all the features that are available on such higher-end softwares, and you end up not using the entire software cause it is not designed for beginners.
If you are looking to edit videos on your computer, then I would recommend starting with Filmora, Clipchamp, or iMovies and for mobile devices, I would recommend Inshot.
Conclusion
Well, there you have it. An article discussing the different types of video editing software and a brief history of the concept of video editing as well.
Video editing is an interesting field, and many people use different types of softwares for editing their videos.
