Woman Talking (2022)

Run Time – 1h 44m

Director – Sarah Polley

Genre – Drama

Cast – Rooney Mara, Ben Whishaw, Frances McDormand

Winner of Best Adapted Screenplay at this year’s Oscars and one of my favourite films from last year, Woman Talking is set in a village that is quite religious, and it mostly focuses on the woman of the village as they decide either to stay or leave their village because of the way the Men of villagers treat them.

The film shows quick flashbacks of the violence done against the women in the community, and the film is truly well made, with a runtime that flies.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves  (2023)

Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves

Run Time – 2hrs 14 Mins

Director – John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein

Genre – Action Adventure

Cast – Chris Pine, Justice Smith, Michelle Rodriguez, Sophia Lillis

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is based on the real board game D&D and it comes to us from the directors of Game Night (amazing comedy film, as well), and it is an adventure story set in the world of D&D.

The story revolves around a gang of misfits as they try to save the world, and this film is ridiculously entertaining. The entire adventure of the film is wonderfully done, it is funny in a lot of areas, and it has a good amount of heart, as well.

Definitely a good family film to watch!

Red, White and Royal Blue (2023)

Red, White and Royal Blue

Run Time – 1h 58m

Director – Matthew Lopez

Genre – Romance/Fantasy

Cast – Nicholas Galitzine, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Uma Thurman

Red, White and Royal Blue is also a recent movie to be released on Amazon Prime. The main story revolves around the character Alex Claremont-Diaz, who is the first son of the United States and his relationship with young Prince Henry.

Since they are both from distinct families and have a very public lives, they both try to keep their relationship a secret from everyone and what follows is an adventure between the two.

Red, White and Royal Blue tells the classic love-story with a little different twist, and it is a fun time at Amazon Prime.

Pathaan (2023)

Run Time – 2h 26m

Director – Siddharth Anand

Genre – Action/Thriller

Cast – Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham

Back with a bang, SRK returns to the big screen, and on Prime Video, after 4 Years and ends up delivering the Highest Grossing Hindi Film (although many suggest that Jawan will end up beating this one).

Pathaan is a fun film to watch, it defies logic and gravity sometimes, but the overall experience of watching the film is quite refreshing, especially from all the other Bollywood movies that have been released so far.

If you missed out on this one in the theatres, then you should definitely catch up with it on Amazon Prime!

Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Top Gun Maverick

Run Time – 2h 11m

Director – Joseph Kosinski

Genre – Action Drama

Cast – Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm

My favourite film from last year; Top Gun: Maverick, feels like a great summer film, and it is one, as well! Destined to be watched on the biggest screen possible because of its jaw-dropping aerial sequences that they shot for real, this movie will entertain you through and through.

Tom Cruise delivered on the spectacle, but along with it, director Joseph Kosinski (director of Tron Legacy, another great film to check out) was able to tell a neat little story that was fast-paced and very entertaining.

The film ended up getting nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars and even won an award at Best Sound Design. The film is super entertaining, and watch it on the biggest screen you have, with the best sound system!

The Out-Laws (2017)

The Out-Laws on prime

Run Time – 2h 1m

Director – Kang Yoon-Sung

Genre – Action/Crime

Cast – Ma Dong-seok, Yoon Kye-sang, Jo Jae-yoon

Not to be confused with the Netflix film with the same name, The Out-Laws is a Korean film, and it is about a detective trying to keep peace by ending a turf war between two Chineare-Korean gangs operating in Seoul.

The Out-Laws is a really fun action film that actually has a lot of humour in it, as well, and the overall film is actually based on a true story, which is also kind of an insane thing when you see what happens in the film!

It stars Ma Dong-seok, who is considered a legend as an action star, and this film does deliver on some great fan moments, as well!

‘Kill Bill: Vol. 1’ (2003) / ‘Kill Bill Vol. 2’ (2004)

Kill Bill

Run Time – 1h 51m

Director – Quentin Tarantino

Genre – Action/Crime

Cast – Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox

Both the Kill Bill films are often considered to be one big giant story that is split into two parts, and you are able to watch both of them on Amazon Prime.

Known for its action sequences and a good amount of violence and blood, the Kill Bill series is often considered to be Quentin Tarantino’s best film as he does show his love for various forms of cinema in this one film.

If you are someone who loves to watch action films and doesn’t squeal at violence, such as crushing an eyeball, then this film series is just for you!

Memento (2000)

Memento on Amazon Prime

Run Time – 1h 53m

Director – Christopher Nolan

Genre – Mystery/ Thriller

Cast – Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss

Generally regarded as the film that made the world know about Christopher Nolan, Memento is still considered to be one of the best films that he has directed to this day.

The film revolves around Leonard Shelby, who suffers from amnesia, and he tries to find the killer of his wife based on a number of notes and tattoos that he has made over his body.

The film is a great thriller, with Nolan telling the story through his non-linear style, which actually adds up, as that is how even our main protagonist feels like! It is a great watch and something that you can catch on Amazon Prime!

Tár (2022)

Tar

Run Time – 2h 38m

Director – Todd Field

Genre – Drama/ Thriller

Cast – Cate Blanchett, Nina Hoss

The story of Tar follows a fictional, very well-renowned musician, Lydia Tár, as she is a few days away from recording a symphony that she has been anticipating for a very long time and that would help her reach a new phase in her career.

However, things slowly start to fall apart, and they don’t go as she had planned. Tar is a unique film, and it is not for everybody. It does fall under the genre of prestige cinema, where it has a slow burner runtime.

Along with the journey, the film does take some creative choices that are quite ambiguous, and the film is a little unsettling, as well! It wasn’t my cup of tea, but you can watch it on Prime and see for yourself whether you like the film or not.

Smile (2022)

Run Time – 1h 55m

Director – Parker Finn

Genre – Horror/Psychological horror

Cast – Sosie Bacon, Caitlin Stasey, Kyle Gallner, Jessie T.

Smile was a surprise hit last year at the box office, and it was appreciated by the audience for being a great horror story. The story of Smile follows Dr. Rose Cotter, who experiences a bizarre and a very traumatic incident with her patient.

After that, weird things start to happen in her life, and soon she has to confront her past, in order to get rid of the terror that has taken over her.

Smile is a film that will certainly not make you smile, but will most definitely have you watching the film with your eyes covered. It is a good horror film to catch on Amazon Prime!

Missing (2023)

Missing

Run Time – 1h 51m

Director – Nicholas D. Johnson, Will Merrick

Genre – Thriller/Mystery

Cast – Storm Reid, Nia Long, Joaquim de Almeida

Missing is a sort of sequel to the hit film Searching that came out in 2018. Just like Searching, Missing is also a film that is told through entirely on screen and it is about a daughter trying to find her lost mother.

Missing was a film that did surprise me by how I engaged I was, even though the story was told just through screens and not through phsyical cameras.

There are plenty of twists in the film and the film is quite good as a thriller. It is definetly much bigger than Seaching and it is pretty good!

No Country for Old Men (2007)

Run Time – 2h 2m

Director – Ethan Coen, Joel Coen

Genre – Crime/Drama

Cast –  Javier Bardem, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson

No Country for Old Men is an iconic film, and it is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime, as well.

The basic story of the film starts off when a hunter finds two million dollars in the aftermath of a drug deal and how his life changes when a psychopathic killer goes after him for that money.

This is just the basic outline of the film, but there is lot more going on in it, and if you are someone who loves to watch the film and actually would like to study acting, as well, then this film is definitely for you!

The Hunger Games Series (2012 – 2015)

The Hunger Games Series

Directors – Francis Lawrence, Gary Ross

Genre – Action/ Adventure

Cast – Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson

The Hunger Games series was definitely something that a lot of people were looking forward to, especially during that time frame when Jennifer Lawrence was at the height of her fame, and the whole Young Adult books adaptation was happening in Hollywood.

They decided to split the last book into two parts, something that necessarily didn’t work for them. However, the series as a whole is still something that a lot of people liked, and it was the better ones at the time, in terms of the YA movie adaptation genre.

You can watch the entire series on Amazon Prime!

Harry Potter Series (2001 – 2011)

Harry Potter Series

Director –  Chris Columbus (1–2), Alfonso Cuarón (3), Mike Newell (4), David Yates (5–8)

Genre – Fantasy/ Adventure

Cast – Daniel Radcliff, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint

Harry Potter is an IP that doesn’t need no introduction. The books ended in 2007, and they are still getting sold in bookstores, and the movies are also classic!

Started in 2001 with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone with the introduction to Harry, Ron and Hermoine and the Wizarding World, everything was all sweet and nice. However, as the story progressed, you could see how dark and mature it got.

The movies did a pretty damn good job at adapting the books and also standing on their own rather than fully depending on the books!

While some movies did piss off some hard-core fans for not being true to the material, everyone unanimously fell in love with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 and the way it ended the story.

It was a bittersweet moment, and for many, having their childhood end with that film, but the series is an amazing watch, with each installment being better than its predecessor, and you can watch all of them on Amazon Prime!

Conclusion

Well, there you have it. An article discussing some of the best new movies that are available on Prime. Do note that since Prime also license many of the movies on its platforms, they also end up with their license timeline.

So, some movies may or not may not be available. But still, as a whole, there is a lot to watch on Amazon Prime.

As always, this has been my list. What about you? Do you agree with it? Or do you think that I missed out on a few of the newer entries on Prime?
