Spy x Family

Japanese Title: Supai Famiri

Studio: Wit Studio, CloverWorks

Number of Episodes: 32(as of November 2023)

IMDb Rating: 8.4/10

Spy x Family Review

Crunchyroll is the place to go for the latest anime. Episodes are uploaded here with subtitles mere hours after their release. The same is true for Spy x Family. It follows the master spy Twilight who has to build a fake family to spy on political leader Donovan Desmond.

So, he disguises himself as a psychiatrist Loid Forger, recruits Yor Briar as his wife and adopts a young orphan Anya. But there’s a twist in the tale. Yor is actually an assassin named Thorn Princess while Anya has telepathic abilities.

Now, Twilight must learn to be the perfect father and husband for his mission, especially with the aforementioned factors being thrown into the mix.

Spy x Family is a breakout anime that is a cross between a goofy comedy and a spy thriller. The story and characters have a lot of heart, the animation is great and the series also delivers some relevant commentary on family and class. All in all, Spy x Family is a win in our books.

One Piece

One Piece

Japanese Title: Wan Pisu

Studio: Toei Animation

Number of Episodes: 1,084(as of November 2023)

IMDb Rating: 8.9/10

One Piece Review

Ah, One Piece. The anime that has been airing since…well, forever. Based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga, it narrates the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates led by Monkey D. Luffy. He is in search of the mythical treasure “One Piece” to become the next King of the Pirates.

In his journeys with his crew, Luffy encounters other pirates, revolutionaries, bounty hunters, secret agents, scientists, soldiers of the World Government, and other friends and foes as they all set out to the sea to realize their dreams.

Succinctly, One Piece is an incredibly fun romp that will leave you wanting for more. It is a pirate adventure, but it blends action, humor, and heavy stuff in such a manner that it never becomes overwhelming for the viewer.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen

Japanese Title: Jujutsu Kaisen

Studio: MAPPA

Number of Episodes: 41(as of November 2023)

IMDb Rating: 8.6/10

Jujutsu Kaisen Review

Jujutsu Kaisen focuses on high school student Yuji Itadori who becomes the host of a powerful curse called Ryomen Sukuna. To get rid of the curse, he joins a secret organization of Jujutsu sorcerers.

Jujutsu Kaisen is a dark action anime that combines elements of battle manga along with horror comic aesthetics. Along with being extremely watchable, its slick style makes it unique even among the Shounen anime series.

The female characters of Jujutsu Kaisen are also well-developed and do not adhere to traditional gender tropes. It presents a variety of female perspectives and the unique pressures they face. This factor also helps make it an especially beloved series.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Frieren Beyond Journey’s End

Japanese Title: Soso no Furiren

Studio: Madhouse

Number of Episodes: 11(as of November 2023)

IMDb Rating: 8.9/10

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Review

Adapted from Kanehito Yamada’s manga, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is one of the latest additions to Crunchyroll’s vast library. Set in a fantasy world, it tells the story of a group of heroes, especially the elf Frieren who finds herself alone after outliving her comrades.

The series then follows Frieren as she seeks magic spells with an apprentice and also narrates the heroes’ adventures in flashbacks. Frieren: Beyond Journey End is, thus, a part adventure, part introspective anime exploring the themes of mortality, grief, and friendship.

Frieren is a likeable protagonist and Fern too is a well-rounded character and not just a stereotypical sidekick. So far, the anime has stayed true to the source material to deliver an emotional and in-depth exploration of human nature.

Dr. Stone

Dr. Stone

Japanese Title: Dokuta Suton

Studio: TMS Entertainment

Number of Episodes: 52(as of November 2023)

IMDb Rating: 8.1/10

Dr. Stone Review

In a post-apocalyptic world, the human race has been frozen in stone for 3,700 years beginning in 2019. This changes in April 5738 when a 16-year-old Senku Ishigami finds himself revived and discovers a world where all traces of human civilization have eroded. The prodigy student then sets out to study the petrified humans to determine the cause as well as the cure for their condition.

Listed as a shounen anime, Dr. Stone distinguished itself from its contemporaries with its original premise and distinct protagonist. Senku is someone who has confidence in his intelligence and relies on it instead of physical strength. The series is also extremely scientifically accurate- something that will delight chemistry and engineering nerds.

Horimiya

Horimiya

Japanese Title: Hori-san to Miyamura-kun

Studio: CloverWorks

Number of Episodes: 13

IMDb Rating: 8.1/10

Horimiya Review

If you’re in the mood for a fun and heart-fluttering romance, then Horimiya on Crunchyroll is perfect for you. It is a light-hearted high school romance with all its tropey goodness. Secret identity trope? Friends to lovers? A guaranteed happy ending. Horimiya has it all.

The plot of Horimiya revolves around Kyoko Hori, who is a smart and popular high school student. However, she is hiding a secret from everybody at school. No one knows that Kyoko is a homebody at her home who has to look after her younger brother.

Izumi Miyamura is the complete opposite of Kyoko. Her classmate is a seemingly average nerdy guy. But he, too, has a secret life! That too, as a tattooed and pierced teenager.

So, What happens when each discovers the other’s secret identity? Why, of course, friendship and shenanigans? As Kyoko and Izumi get closer, they learn that they have more in common than they are willing to admit.

A charming romance with relatable characters, a lot of hilarity, and a sweet ending make Horimiya one of the best romance anime available on Crunchyroll.

Erased

Erased A detective manga

Japanese Title: Boku dake ga Inai Machi

Studio: A-1 Pictures

Number of Episodes: 12

IMDb Rating: 8.5/10

Erased Review

Erased is one of the best mystery anime on Crunchyroll. It follows 29-year-old pizza delivery driver Satoru Fujinuma who possesses the ability of “Revival.” This ability lets his consciousness go back in time to moments before a life-threatening accident and prevent it from happening again. However, Satoru cannot control this power, and the Revival happens randomly on its own.

When his mother is murdered by an unknown assailant, and he emerges as a suspect, Satoru’s Revival ability sends him 18 years into the past. With his adult self in his 11-year-old body, Satoru now must save his mother’s life and prevent the kidnapping of one of his classmates that directly affects his future situation.

Erased is a haunting story that stays with you long after you’re done watching it. It prioritizes its characters over complicated twists and turns and quite maturely handles sensitive topics like child abuse.

However, Erased’s biggest strength lies in its world-building and atmosphere. The main characters and the bond between them quickly draw you into the anime. Meanwhile, the feeling of something not being right keeps building up inside you. Even if the mystery is predictable, you should watch Erased for its excellent characters, atmosphere, and satisfying ending.

Gintama

Gintama

Japanese Title: Gintama

Studio: Sunrise

Number of Episodes: 367

IMDb Rating: 8.7/10

Gintama Review

In an alternate timeline, Edo has been conquered by aliens named Amanto. The shogun enters into an unequal contract with the Amanto and samurai are all but banned in the country. Having no other option, the eccentric samurai Gintoki Sakata is now doing whatever odd jobs he can find.

Due to a series of events, a teenager, Shinpachi Shimura, and an alien girl with super-strength Kagura end up joining Gintoki in his freelancing business, and they come to be known as Yorozuya. They accept all sorts of jobs that they get and more often than not, their adventures lead to some hilarious situations.

With a science-fiction blend, Gintama is more a parody of the shounen genre than an actual serious series. It has a one-of-its-kind comedy that delivers a lot of laughs. Even then, the anime easily shifts between comedy and drama without causing whiplash. Watch Gintama if you’re in the mood for a truly hilarious anime.

Blue Spring Ride

Blue Spring Ride

Japanese Title: Aoharaido

Studio: Production I.G

Number of Episodes: 12

IMDb Rating: 7.5/10

Blue Spring Ride Review

Blue Spring Ride, also known as Ao Haru Ride, tells the story of sixteen-year-old Futaba Yoshioka whose first love Kou Tanaka has returned from Nagasaki after he disappeared during their middle school days. Kou is, however, no longer the sweet and gentle boy that Futaba remembers. He now uses the surname Mabuchi and is a cold, guarded and pessimistic person.

Contrary to what you may think of shoujo romance anime, Blue Spring Ride is a mature and substantial story. All the characters especially Futaba and Kou have depth in them. Their personal growth journey as they navigate the complicated lanes of love is something you have to see to appreciate.

Blue Spring Ride is not just a romance but a story about life and how we often build obstacles to our happiness ourselves. It is important to let go of that naivete and self-destructive tendencies to find happiness. Even if you’re not a romance fan, Blue Spring Ride is worth watching for its life lessons and positive message.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Japanese Title: Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Review

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is imaginative and bizarre but also really fun. The titular Haruhi Suzumiya is a quiet and eccentric girl who constantly seeks to make life more interesting for herself. She talks about aliens, espers, and future men and actively searches for supernatural phenomena.

Her classmate Kyon is the complete opposite but gets involved in Haruhi’s antics when he accidentally plants the idea of a club to investigate mysterious events in her head.
